Open the Photo & Video category on the app store and you’ll instantly be swarmed by apps. From quasi-DSLR camera apps with manual controls to the essential photo editing apps, you’ll be spoiled for choice (and probably a little overwhelmed). But dig a little deeper and you’ll notice that a lot of these apps are by and large the same.
So what sets the apps on this list apart? Well, for one, the developers are constantly improving these apps with new features and functionality to make sure you get the most bang out of your buck. Secondly, these apps have been an indispensable part of my photography arsenal and without them I’d actually be forced to, y’know, learn Photoshop.
Afterlight 2 (iOS, $2.99)
At an entry cost of $2.99, it might be tempting to turn to the many other free app offerings available. After all, there’s a lot of things you could get for that price. A plate of chicken rice. Durian McFlurry. One and a half items from Daiso. Yet, none of those things will provide as much value as Afterlight 2 does.
What makes this app so much better than the competition is the sheer control you get over your edits. Adjustments can be made between -100 to +100 so you never get stuck wishing there was an option between +1 and +2.
Then you come to Afterlight’s unique range of filters, none of which are locked behind a dreaded in-app purchase. You can even experiment by mixing and matching different filters that can be then saved as Fusion filters for future use.
Finish off the editing by adding on some sweet light leaks, color shifts, text and even other artwork if that’s your thing.
Whenever Afterlight is brought up, VSCO is usually presented as the OG photo editing app. Having once been a VSCO purist myself, I much prefer Afterlight for the sleeker UI and improved functionality that isn’t locked behind a paywall (looking at you VSCO X). Unfortunately, Afterlight 2 is only available for iOS and can be downloaded here. Android users can still try out the original Afterlight here.
TouchRetouch (iOS & Android, $2.98)
As someone who’s slightly finicky about his photos, I find myself often deleting photos that have unsightly objects in the background. After finding out about this app through a local influencer, I knew I had to have it. There’s really not much to say for TouchRetouch. For those who are lazy to either learn or use Photoshop, TouchRetouch offers a fuss free, easy to use alternative. Take this image for example. (I found it on the wall of a local burger joint and the quote really resonated with me.)
However, the red dots and lines to the side of it are an eyesore.
Simply choose the Object Removal tool, highlight over it and poof! The marks are gone!
Unfold (iOS & Android, free)
For those looking to create the perfect Instagram Highlight of your latest holiday, look no further than Unfold. With a slew of ready-made templates, Unfold lets you tell your story the way you want to.
Moment (iOS, free; Android, $2.49)
Those looking for a little more control over their photography will feel right at home with Moment. I’ve used plenty of “pro” camera apps but none have had interfaces as intuitive as Moment. All settings can be controlled via simple swipes, and for those using iPhone X, the telephoto zoom lens can be activated with a simple touch. For those on iPhone 6s and later, you can even force touch the screen to mimic a half press on the DSLR.
Moment also allows you to shoot in TIFF and RAW formats for those who want as little loss of detail as possible and features compatibility modes for their range of phone camera lenses. While the base app is free for iPhone, manual settings and RAW formats can be unlocked with an in-app purchase of $4.48. There are no additional in-app purchases on Android. Moment is available on both iOS and Android.
A chicken rice stall at Redhill is selling their chicken rice for $0.54 per plate for Singaporeans aged 54 & above
This is the time of the year where all the National Day promotions start popping up everywhere.
We are sure that many people have been scarred by the one by Huawei (26 July, Friday) and we hope that this promotion will make things a little better for everyone.
On Saturday, 3 August 2019. OK Chicken Rice stall at Redhill will be selling their well-loved chicken rice for just $0.54 a plate in celebration of our nations 54th birthday.
The catch here, similar to that of the Huawei promotion, is that you have to be a Singapore Citizen who is above the age of 54. But good news to everyone who isn’t above the age of 54: you still get to enjoy a 54% discount off all menu items.
Like every other promotion out there, this is available while stocks last and each customer is only entitled to one plate of chicken rice. So, we recommend that you head down early to snag yourselves a plate before it is all gone!

Jollibee is finally open at Waterway Point and the queues are insane
It is no secret that Singaporeans love their fried chicken, especially the ones from the famous Filipino fast-food chain, Jollibee.
When people heard that an outlet would be opening at Waterway Point on 18 July (Friday), you can bet that many people were pretty excited about the news.
And to show their enthusiasm, some people started queueing outside the store from as early as 7.30am.
Jollibee snapped some pictures of the insane queues and shared them on Facebook to show everyone how well-loved their fried chicken is.
One reason for the long queues was that the first 100 people in the line were entitled to the very adorable Jollibee pillows. The lucky first 5 customers managed to walk away with the limited edition Jollibee Funko POP! Figurine.
So, if you’re a fried chicken lover and you live near Waterway Point, you definitely need to check Jollibee’s new outlet out (maybe after the queues have died down)!

Famous Burger Joint Five Guys is opening an outlet in Singapore by end of 2019
Queued 2 hours for Shake Shack but it didn’t quite make the cut? Fret not as you can look forward to sinking your teeth into another popular American burger joints burgers pretty soon.
Five Guys is slated to open an outlet at Plaza Singapura by the end of 2019 and they will most likely be situated near the main atrium at the ground level of the mall.
For those of you who have been living under a rock and do not know what Five Guys are, they essentially are a burger joint that specialises in outrageously juicy and lip-smackingly good burgers that are made from 100% freshly ground beef.
The brand has 8 burgers on their menu which ranges from the classic Cheeseburger to the more sinful Bacon Cheeseburger.
One thing that makes Five Guys so popular is the fact that you are given the freedom to choose as many toppings as you please; from tangy relish to juicy grilled mushrooms, you’ll undoubtedly be spoilt for choice!
We are unsure if the Singapore menu will be the same as their American counterpart but we are sure that either way, it’ll taste amazing!
