Here’s A Different Kind of Festival at Sands for Singapore 2018

Published

on

Mention Marina Bay Sands and the word ‘luxury’ comes to mind. For what it’s worth, the glittering shopping mall, home to world class celebrity chef restaurants and haute couture brands, has branded itself as the destination for all things opulent.

But here’s what you may not know: since 2013, MBS has raised nearly a whopping $20 million in total for local charities. They achieved that milestone with help from the public via their annual Sands for Singapore Charity Festival, with this year being their sixth edition.

Sands for Singapore is a yearly multi-day event that aims to raise awareness and funds for MBS’ partner charities. Different facets of the integrated resort are used to host various activities catered for family and friends. Regardless of age, there’s something for everyone.

Here’s how you can extend your help to the community in fun and celebratory ways:

Chill over live music and award-winning hawker food

In partnership with Dignity Kitchen, a hawker training school for the disabled and disadvantaged, chefs from MBS’ signature restaurants will prepare top notch dishes from their menu with help from the beneficiaries of Dignity Kitchen.

This festival will give members of the social enterprise a chance to acquire new knowledge and showcase their culinary skills. Participating restaurants include db Bistro & Oyster Bar and Bread Street Kitchen and Bar.

On top of that, enjoy performances by local bands Supersonic, 53A, and the HubbaBubbas. If you get bored, there’ll be fringe activities such as art jamming and drone fishing to participate in.

Go on an amazing race

Grab five other pals and form a team of six to participate in this year’s Play It Forward. Representing a local charity of your choice, partake in creative challenges around the resort. Each station in the route symbolises a charity supported by MBS.

Sweat it out

Together with Community Chest, get on your feet and go on a 4km walk around Marina Bay. If you’re up for a challenge, race 57 floors up to the SkyPark Observation Deck. Not only do you get to burn those calories, you stand to win attractive prizes sponsored by MBS, too. Not bad at all.

Visit the museum and other attractions

During this festival weekend, all ticket sales from the ArtScience Museum, Sampan rides, Sands SkyPark Observation Deck and the new Digital Light Canvas will go to local charities.

Sands for Singapore Charity Festival 2018 runs from 24 to 26 August at various timings. Entry is free. For more information, visit here

C3 AFA 2018: A taste of Akihabara in Singapore

Published

on

Since the days of Naruto in 480p to present day Boruto in HD, Anime Festival Asia (AFA) has been a staple for local fans of anime and Japanese pop culture. The annual affair has grown tremendously since it first reached our shores back in 2008, solidifying its status as a pilgrimage of sorts, akin to the wonders of Akihabara.

Back for its tenth anniversary, AFA 2018 proved to be the best its ever been with performances from a star-studded lineup at the I Love Anisong concert series, renown cosplayers and more exclusive merchandise than ever before. Didn’t get to attend? Fret not, here’s everything you missed from the greatest anime exhibition of the year.

Walk in and you’ll be greeted by this massive Gundam model. I don’t know about you but the sooner we get actual functional Gundams the better!

Fans of Gunpla were also in for a treat with this huge selection. There’s even more selections at the back!

Of course, AFA wouldn’t be complete without the game taking Japan (and frankly, the world) by storm. Whether you love or hate the Gacha mechanics of the game, it’s hard to argue with Fate Grand Order’s (FGO)’s success. Staying true to the game mechanics, at the center of the exhibition was a summoning circle where fans could place their phones to summon in-game characters.

Gaming was also a huge part of AFA this year. Apart from FGO, Honkai Impact also featured a booth where players could compete in time trials. Scattered around the exhibition were also other games such as Taiko Drum Master, Touhou and even PUBG.

My favourite part of AFA though, was undoubtedly the food. It was like a taste of Japan without actually flying there!

The Day Stage also featured a ton of prominent celebrities and guests, from Eri Sasaki (pictured) to the creators of Pop Team Epic and even famous cosplayers such as Hakken (pictured).

And this pretty much sums up AFA in one picture. It’s a celebration of all things Japan. It’s quirky, fun, and fans can be another side of themselves, even if it’s for just a day.
